Mentoring Practice
Practice Supervision and Mentoring—“Creating a Community of Wisdom”
"The mentor does not give in order to receive; giving is in itself exquisite joy—In the act of giving something is born, and both persons involved are both grateful for the life that is born for both of them."—Fromm, 1970, pp 24
There is an aspect of practice management many therapists do not consider when they are exploring avenues for professional and personal growth: a mentoring relationship. Being in a mentoring relationship creates a setting that offers support, collaboration, valuable insight and guidance. This partnership will encourage and inspire practitioners to create a practice that serves both their clients and themselves. The mentoring relationship enables the practitioner to develop and sustain the practice they desire! I believe it is time to bring this long-lost tradition into the field of bodywork and massage therapy.
So what is a mentoring relationship? It is a paid relationship with an experienced professional that creates a powerful commitment to mutual learning and partnership. This partnership provides a useful framework that offers challenge and facilitates a process of growth and change. This relationship offers an interpersonal climate of safety and support, fostering self-responsibility and empowerment.
How will a mentoring relationship help me? A mentoring relationship will allow you to handle a wide range of situations within your practice. It offers guidance in maintaining an ethical practice and reduces burnout. The management of establishing and maintaining a clear and healthy practice is often confusing and demanding. This partnership will assist practitioners with the multidimensional demands of our business: dynamics of the therapeutic relationship, creating and maintaining a successful practice, and communication skills. Often hearing the fears and doubts of other practitioners who are feeling challenged can help others feel less isolated and alone.
My observation is many people enter this profession with the deep desire to be of service to others. We become very skilled with our hands. Our hands become our gift. This is usually not enough. What is often lacking are relationship and business skills. I believe working with a mentor is an invaluable benefit and necessary choice for professional development. My mentoring program is offered in groups and individual consultations. I cultivate collaborative relationships filled with warmth, honesty, challenge and integrity—fertile ground for personal and professional development. The relationship holds a sense of mutual empowerment and openness to learning for both parties. It is nice to help one another on this journey of life!
